Sand filtration has been
around since the early 1800 for water and wastewater treatment.
Industrial wastewater applications today are more demanding than
municipal applications because of the range of contaminants, space
constraints, maintenance and cost issues. New filtering solutions have
been demanded by the industrial market for post-treatment prior to
discharge of an effluent.
A synthetic engineered
media, the only one on the market, is available today with packaged
controls for better results than offered by traditional sand systems.
Kinetico Macrolite® is a ceramic material processed from mineral oxide
that is chemically inert and is not affected by acids and bases. It is
offered with a 10-year manufacturer’s warranty, will last significantly
longer than sand, with an attrition rate nearly zero. It offers a higher
surface area than sand, which means that the system runs at higher
velocities. In addition, backwashing is faster with bleach or water,
less volume is required, and flow rates of 10-15 gpm/ft2 are
possible compared to sand at 3-5 gpm/ft2.
Macrolite is a highly
efficient filter media for removing suspended metals, oxidized iron and
other contaminants. 40-60 mesh media has tremendous loading capacity and
skid mounted dual pressure vessels with mounted controls and Kinetico
Hydrus or DI filter valves offers automatic regeneration, easy
integration into the waste system, and lower labor costs.
